    La Storia

The High Line's story began in the 1930s as part of a massive infrastructure project to elevate freight trains above Manhattan's streets, reducing dangerous at-grade crossings. After decades of service, the last train ran in 1980, and the structure fell into disuse and disrepair, facing demolition threats.

In 1999, local residents founded Friends of the High Line, a non-profit organization, to advocate for its preservation and reuse as a public park. Their vision, coupled with design competition winners James Corner Field Operations, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and planting designer Piet Oudolf, transformed the derelict railway into a beloved urban park.

The High Line opened in phases, with the first section in 2009, followed by the second in 2011, and the final section, including the Spur, in 2014-2019. This incredible transformation has not only preserved a piece of New York City's industrial past but also created a dynamic public space that has inspired similar urban renewal projects worldwide.
